Breast Augmentation Q & A
What is breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that aims to enhance the size, firmness, or shape of your breasts with silicone or saline implants or a fat transfer. It is one of the most popular and commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States.
Whether your breasts are uneven, smaller than you’d like, or they have lost volume over time, breast augmentation surgery at Doheny Sunset Surgery Center, Inc. can give you a fuller, more balanced look.
What can breast augmentation surgery do?
Breast augmentation doesn’t just increase the cup size of your breasts; it can:
- Balance uneven breasts
- Increase volume and size
- Enhance the projection of breasts
- Improve breast size to hip ratio
- Reconstruct breasts after a mastectomy or severe injury
Dr. Srour often uses breast augmentation surgery to reshape breasts to make them appear rounder and more conventionally attractive. He can also perform breast reduction if you’re unhappy with the large size of your breasts.
Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery may be right for you if you:
- Are in good health
- Have fully developed breasts
- Have asymmetrical or uneven breasts
- Feel that your breasts appear empty or flat
- Have small breasts
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
This procedure is not the same as a breast lift, which lifts droopy or saggy breasts. However, Dr. Srour can perform a breast lift in addition to augmentation, so talk to him if you would like both procedures to achieve the breasts you want.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
At your initial consultation, talk to Dr. Srour about your reasons for wanting a breast augmentation and the look you hope to achieve. This meeting helps Dr. Srour determine how to perform the procedure while discussing your implant options.
A breast augmentation requires anesthesia, so you feel comfortable during the procedure. Once sedated, Dr. Srour makes small incisions in inconspicuous areas of your breasts to create the look you desire.
There are three types of breast augmentation incisions:
- Along the areolar edge of the nipples (periareolar incision)
- Along the fold underneath the breasts (inframammary incision)
- In the armpit axillary incision
The types of incisions Dr. Srour uses depends entirely on the look, shape, firmness, and fullness you want.
He then inserts the implants directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle before closing the incision.
What can I expect from breast augmentation recovery?
You can typically return home about one hour after the procedure. You need a trusted friend or relative to drive you home. When you leave, Dr. Srour may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection or pain medication.
Throughout the beginning stages of your recovery, you must wear a bandage (bandeau) 24/7 to promote healing and prevent injury. The recovery process for breast augmentation surgery takes about six to eight weeks in total.
