What is a blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty is a common procedure that removes excess skin from droopy eyelids and/or eliminates bulging fat deposits underneath the eye. While many people want a blepharoplasty for cosmetic purposes, it can also improve your vision if saggy skin around your eyes is affecting your eyesight.
Why do my eyelids look droopy?
As you age, your body produces less of the collagen and elastin that keep your skin firm and plump. When combined with gravity and naturally weakening muscles, the thin skin around your eyes may start to sag. This often leads to:
- Droopy eyelids
- Puffy fat deposits underneath the eyes
- Wrinkles around the eyes
- Impaired vision
- Saggy eyebrows
Blepharoplasty eliminates the excess skin around your eyes, so you look younger, fresher, and more alert.
Am I a good candidate for a blepharoplasty?
If you feel frustrated or embarrassed by droopy eyelids, wrinkles, or large under-eye bags, then eyelid surgery may be the right treatment for you. A good blepharoplasty patient must:
- Be a nonsmoker
- Be in good health
- Have realistic goals
- Not have any serious eye conditions
Certain conditions, like diabetes, thyroid disease, or dry eye, may disqualify you from eyelid surgery, so talk to Dr. Srour about any preexisting medical conditions at your initial consultation at Doheny Sunset Surgery Center, Inc.
How is a blepharoplasty performed?
If you and Dr. Srour agree that eyelid surgery is right for you at your initial consultation, Doheny Sunset Surgery Center, Inc. schedules a surgical appointment for you.
Make sure to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications and supplements prior to the surgery to limit the risk of bleeding and bruising.
You receive IV sedation and local anesthesia for blepharoplasty procedures, so you will be asleep during the surgery.
First, Dr. Srour makes small incisions in the natural creases of the upper eyelids; then he makes another right beneath the lashes on the lower eyelids. Using specialized instruments, Dr. Srour removes excess fat from underneath the eyes. Once healed, these incision marks are virtually invisible.
What is the blepharoplasty recovery process like?
Minor swelling, itching, bruising, dry eyes, and general discomfort are perfectly normal after eyelid surgery. Dr. Srour will give you special instructions on how to reduce inflammation and pain before you leave the office. He may also prescribe certain medications to help you avoid infection.
While the full healing process can take up to a few months, you should be able to confidently walk outside in public after 10-14 days.
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is the surgical reshaping of the pinna, or the outer ear. Many people choose otoplasty procedures to correct a congenital deformity or to reconstruct the ear after an accident.
During the procedure, Dr. Srour makes a small incision either behind the ear or in the inner creases of your ear, depending on what you want to correct. He may remove excess cartilage from your ear at this time or fold the cartilage into the proper position and secure it with stitches. For about two to six weeks, you’ll wear a headband at night to protect your ears while you recover.
A blepharoplasty can improve your vision and take years off your appearance, while an otoplasty can reshape or pin back your ears. To schedule an appointment with Doheny Sunset Surgery Center, Inc., call or book online.
